Women and Heart Attacks
In the USA there are 1.25 Million heart attacks each year.
This translates into one per 217 people.
Many think that women are protected from heart attacks by the
estrogen progesterone cycle which causes their periods.
The facts are different. By the time one reaches the 45-54 age group, the
incidence of cardiovascular disease is equal in men and women.
In the next decade women aged 55-64 with heart disease, will exceed men by
3%.
The following decade women aged 65-74 will exceed men by 7%.
The following decade after that women aged 75-up will have an incidence rate
that exceeds men by 10%.
The clinical management of women who have a heart attack or stroke is more
complicated than men and for many women the first sign of a heart attack is
sudden death!
The Triana Prevention Center is prepared to
evaluate individual risk
factors and offer treatment to help prevent heart attack and stroke.
The next issue will introduce the role of diabetes in cardiac risk.
